Key Stage 3 Curriculum Map
Curriculum Intent
To enhance students’ awareness and understanding of the wider world and provide opportunities to expand their horizons. To equip students with skills to develop their understanding and independence. To Nurture and develop students’ confidence and knowledge in at least one Foreign Language so they can express themselves on a wide range of topics.
Key Knowledge and Skills
Year 7
To acquire vocabulary based on different topics and to develop an understanding of grammar in order to encourage confidence and spontaneity within the classroom. There is evidence of cross curricular literacy. Students are becoming aware of customs and events in the world around them.
Year 8
Reinforcement from the previous and a better understanding of grammar and tenses. Students show more resilience when dealing with unfamiliar language and can work independently for a longer period of time. Students can express themselves on different topics related to themselves but also on some wider issues.
Year 9
Students show understanding of all topics within themes 1/2/3 and have built up in depth vocabulary. They are developing a certain degree of accuracy when writing and conversing and have an understanding of grammar and tenses. They show interest in other cultures and demonstrate resilience when dealing with unfamiliar situations.
Sequence Discussion
Year 7
Year 7 should be about enjoyment and spontaneity. Students need to feel comfortable expressing themselves either orally or in writing on a wide variety of topics. They will learn how to talk about themselves and their surroundings and opportunities will allow them to understand some aspects of the world around them. When confronted by challenging situations, the emphasis is on resilience and perseverance. Students are aware of their strengths and weaknesses and how to address them
Year 8
Building up on last year’s topics and adding new ones. Understanding of grammar and tenses need to be drilled and recapitulated on a regular basis. When assessed, students must demonstrate recent and previous knowledge. The vocabulary will be recycled and developed to allow students to communicate in more details. The emphasis is still on coping with challenges especially when dealing with unfamiliar language or situations. Listening and reading practices in class reflect that idea.
Year 9
Y9 should be about maintaining the enthusiasm for learning a foreign language. By the end of KS3 students will have covered all the topics which will be studied in more depth at KS4. Students’ knowledge of grammar and vocabulary should be the stepping stone for GCSE examination. Having covered all topics students are encouraged to express themselves in a more creative and personal manner. They will continue to use and develop their coping strategies into Y9 and beyond. Assessments and marking should allow students to demonstrate a clear understanding of their areas for improvements
