Key Stage 3 Curriculum Map

Curriculum Intent

Year 7 & 8

To provide students with the experience of practical music making in a variety of different ways, to encourage creative thinking and an appreciation of music in different contemporary styles.

Year 9

To encourage students in their own individual musical progress by providing them with the space and resources to actively creative and perform music with their peers. Students are geared more towards GCSE by being able to access key areas such as ensemble performance and more advanced composing and listening.

Key Knowledge and Skills

Year 7 & 8

Performance: A basic understanding of the function of each instrument and an ability to perform a variety of riffs, chords sequences, melodies etc.
Composition: To compose a single section of music which has an effective melody, chords, bass and drums
Music Tech: To be able to navigate and effectively use the basic tools within Audacity and Ignite

Year 9

Ensemble Skills: Sustaining own accurate part, timing, balance, responsiveness to others
Composition: Able to compose an effective Ternary form comp inc. melody, chords, bass and drums
Listening: Firm grasp of the musical elements and able to aurally identify them within random pieces of music

Sequence Discussion

Year 7 & 8

The ‘themes’ which run through Y7 each half term are revisited in Y8 but with new stimulus and with the expectation that the students are challenging themselves at a higher level. 3 levels of challenge are (beginner, intermediate and advanced)

Year 9

Ensemble performance is a new unit for KS3.
Composition builds from Year 7 and Year 8 however now geared more towards the length and standard of GCSE.
