Key Stage 4 Curriculum Map

Curriculum Intent

  1. To equip students with an understanding of the complex world of travel and tourism, and the opportunities and challenges this creates for the UK Economy.
  2. To provide students with a vocational experience in order to equip for the world of work.
  3. To be able to assess and make an informed judgement on a variety of issues in relation to the travel and tourism sector.

Key Knowledge and Skills

Students will have a knowledge that underpins the effective use of skills, processes and attitudes in the sector such as the appeal of different tourist destinations to different types of customers, and the factors that influence travel and tourism. Skills such as researching different travel and tourism organisations, the features of tourist destinations, and the products and services available to meet the needs of different customers. Attitudes that are considered to be very important in the travel and tourism sector, including how to develop tourism while respecting the environment and local communities. In addition the following Assessment objectives are used:

  • AO1 Demonstrate knowledge of the factors influencing travel and tourism organisations, destinations, visitors and the potential impacts of tourism on destinations
  • AO2 Demonstrate understanding of the factors influencing travel and tourism organisations, destinations, visitors, the potential impacts of tourism on destinations and sustainable tourism
  • AO3 Make connections between influencing factors on global travel and tourism, the potential impacts of tourism on destinations, and destination management
  • AO4 Analyse information to make recommendations on how to manage tourism in global destinations

Sequence Discussion

Component 1 is delivered before component 2, the rationale for this is that students will have had the chance to have a broad overview of the range of services provided by the industry and the different organisations that exist within the UK travel and tourism industry. Component 2 is delivered in the latter stages of year 10, this covers issues relating to the tourism sector as a whole and strategies to ensure the sustainable management of tourist destinations. Component 2 is assessed externally in May. Component 3 is delivered within Year 11, this is a synoptic assessment and so builds upon the knowledge from component 1 and 2 by getting students to apply their understanding to a vocational scenario. It is also important to note that the complexities of this unit and the interpersonal skills required by students are best left to be delivered in the later stages of the course.
