Key Stage 5 Curriculum Map

Curriculum Intent

  • Acquire and confidently practice transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, research and analysis, which are valued in both higher education and the workplace.
  • To develop knowledge and adhere to the values, legislation and professional bodies that regulate H&SC.
  • To analyse the role of H&SC in today’s society.

Key Knowledge and Skills

During this course it is the overall aim for students to be ready for the next step. The key skills we encourage them to acquire are:

  • cognitive and problem-solving skills: use critical thinking, approach non-routine problems applying expert and creative solutions, use systems and technology
  • Intrapersonal skills: communicating, working collaboratively, negotiating and influencing, self-presentation
  • Interpersonal skills: self-management, adaptability and resilience, self-monitoring and development

Sequence Discussion

There are three members of staff that teach this course and units run alongside each other.

The key rationale behind the sequence is – units 1 and 2 are covered first due to clear progression from L2- this also allows for two exams to be sat in January. At the same time unit 6- work experience will be started which allows students to gain an overview of all the other unit content they will cover. Unit 3 is to be given the most time as this is the most challenging unit in terms of content for students.

Unit 4 has a set timeframe due to pre-release material and independent study so is sat May/Jun of Year 12. All exam units sat in Year 12 to allow for resits.

Unit 5 is the only synoptic unit and timely so I have moved this to the middle of year 1 to allow for flexibility in delivery.

Year 13 is quite light in terms of units this is to accommodate resits and also the practical element of unit 9 – this is a new unit for this year. The bulk of the content is covered so they can use the knowledge for UCAS applications and interviews.
